Feet measure an edge. Square feet measure a surface.
A 10 ft measurement describes one length. To find a rectangle’s area, you also need its width. A 10 ft long, 10 ft wide rectangle covers 100 sq ft.
The word “square” names the unit; it does not mean your room has to be square. A 20 ft × 5 ft rectangle also covers 100 sq ft. Those two rectangles have the same area but different shapes.
For that reason, you cannot turn 100 sq ft into one room length without more information. For an L-shaped room or a wall with openings, use the measurements and shape in the area calculator.
Convert square feet to other area units
Use this table when you already know an area. The surface stays the same; only the unit and number change. Check that both units are area units before choosing a conversion.
| Other area unit | From sq ft | Back to sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Square meters (m²) | Multiply by 0.09290304 | Divide by 0.09290304 |
| Square yards (sq yd) | Divide by 9 | Multiply by 9 |
| Acres | Divide by 43,560 | Multiply by 43,560 |
| Square inches (sq in) | Multiply by 144 | Divide by 144 |
These factors are exact. For a quick comparison, 1 sq ft ≈ 0.0929 m², and 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 sq ft. The ≈ symbol means “approximately equal.” Keep the full factor while calculating, then round the final result.

Why 9 square feet in a square yard?
One yard is 3 feet. A square yard is therefore 3 ft × 3 ft, containing nine one-square-foot squares. The same idea explains square inches: 12 in × 12 in gives 144 sq in in one square foot.
For square meters, the length relationship is 1 ft = 0.3048 m. Apply it to both sides: 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m² per sq ft.
Two area conversion examples
120 sq ft to square meters
You already have a floor area of 120 sq ft. Multiply that area by the square-meter factor:
= 11.1483648 m², or approximately 11.15 m².
18 sq ft to square yards
Divide by 9 because each square yard contains nine square feet:
If you have dimensions instead, calculate the area first. For example, a 12 ft × 10 ft rectangle gives the 120 sq ft used above. For measurements such as 12 ft 6 in, see the feet and inches input guide.
Check these common mix-ups
- How many square meters is 1 foot?
- A foot is a length, so it cannot be converted directly to an area. One foot equals 0.3048 meters. One square foot equals 0.09290304 square meters.
- Do I divide inches by 12 or 144?
- Divide a length in inches by 12 to get feet. Divide an area in square inches by 144 to get square feet. Look for the word “square” or the ² symbol.
- Are square feet and cubic feet the same?
- No. Square feet measure a surface. Cubic feet measure volume, which also needs a depth or height. A surface area alone does not tell you how much space a pile or container holds.
- Does converting the area include material waste?
- No. A 120 sq ft floor is still the same floor after conversion. Waste allowance and whole-box buying are separate steps; use the flooring buying guide after measuring.
Calculate your own area
Choose the shape and enter its dimensions. Add or subtract sections when your surface needs them.
Sources and method
The unit relationships follow NIST’s tables. Metric factors here use the international foot. Diagram grids and worked results are calculated from those relationships; diagrams are not physical measuring scales.
