How to convert square feet to square yards

Divide the square-foot area by 9. A square that is 1 yard on each side is 3 feet by 3 feet, covering nine square feet.

Square yards = square feet ÷ 9

Example: 120 sq ft to sq yd

120 ÷ 9 gives 13.3333… sq yd, displayed as approximately 13.3333 sq yd. Keep the full value until the last step when using the answer in another calculation.

Square yards may be written as sq yd, sq yds or yd². These are area units; plain yards describe length.

How to convert square yards to square feet

Multiply the square-yard area by 9. The surface stays the same size; you are describing it with smaller units.

Square feet = square yards × 9

Example: 20 sq yd to sq ft

20 × 9 = 180 sq ft. This is an exact conversion of the entered area, with no waste allowance added.

Common conversion questions

Why divide by 9 instead of 3?
Three feet equal one yard along a single edge. For area, both edges change: 3 × 3 = 9. One square yard therefore contains nine square feet.
Can I use this to compare carpet prices?
For the same product and area, a price per square yard divided by 9 gives the equivalent price per square foot. This form converts area only; it does not calculate a price. Check whether quotes also include installation or other charges.
Does the result tell me how much carpet to buy?
It gives equivalent area, not a roll-cutting plan. Roll width, seams and cutting losses affect the order. Use the flooring buying guide to distinguish measured area from purchase quantity.
What if I only know length and width?
First calculate the area using both dimensions in the same unit. Use the square footage calculator for dimensions, then convert the resulting area here. A length alone is not enough.

Sources and method

The factors use the international foot and the area relationships in NIST’s unit tables. Calculations keep the exact factor and round only the displayed answer; extra digits do not improve the original measurement.
