How to convert square feet to acres
Divide the area in square feet by 43,560, the number of square feet in one acre.
Example: 10,890 sq ft to acres
10,890 ÷ 43,560 = 0.25 acres, or one quarter of an acre. A different example, 1,000 sq ft, is approximately 0.023 acres at four decimal places.
Small areas produce small acre values. For example, 1 sq ft is approximately 0.00002296 acres. The converter automatically shows extra digits when needed to avoid displaying a nonzero area as zero.
How to convert acres to square feet
Multiply the area in acres by 43,560. You can enter a decimal portion of an acre, such as 0.25 or 0.5.
Example: 0.5 acres to sq ft
0.5 × 43,560 = 21,780 sq ft. This describes the same area; it does not identify which parts of a property are buildings, garden or other surfaces.

Common conversion questions
- How many square feet are in an acre?
- One acre equals 43,560 square feet. A quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and a half acre is 21,780 sq ft.
- Does one acre have a fixed length and width?
- No. Acres measure area, not shape. Different rectangles and irregular plots can have the same acreage. Converting area cannot determine the boundary or side lengths.
- Does lot acreage equal usable floor or building area?
- No. A plot’s total area and a particular floor or surface are separate measurements. This tool changes units only; it does not determine boundaries, building allowances or the area of a house from an address.
- Which definition of a foot does this tool use?
- It uses the international foot and an acre of 43,560 of those square feet. It does not convert historical U.S. survey-foot data. If an older survey uses that definition, confirm its units before treating it as an ordinary square-foot figure.
Sources and method
The factors use the international foot and the area relationships in NIST’s unit tables. Calculations keep the exact factor and round only the displayed answer; extra digits do not improve the original measurement.
