About SqftTool

Area calculators, unit converters and measuring guides for planning home improvement projects.

Who it’s for

SqftTool provides area calculators, unit converters and measuring guides for homeowners, contractors and people working in home improvement and building supplies. Use the tools to measure surfaces and plan material purchases.

Use it for a whole room, a floor, a wall or a smaller section. The tools show the measurements and area breakdown so you can check where a result comes from.

What you can do

  • Calculate area. Measure one or more rooms, floors or walls. Choose a shape, add sections or subtract openings. Browse calculators →
  • Convert area units. Convert between square feet and square meters, square yards, acres or square inches in either direction. Browse area converters →
  • Get measuring help. Follow practical steps for measuring rooms and walls, entering feet and inches, and working out how much flooring to buy. Browse guides →

How the calculations work

Area calculations use the geometric formula for the shape you choose. Added sections increase the area; subtracted sections reduce it. The parts you add should not overlap.

Area converters use fixed unit relationships, with NIST conversion references linked on the converter pages. The guides include worked examples and relevant measurement or product references. You can find these in each guide’s sources section.

Before you buy materials

Your measured area, allowance for waste and whole-box purchase quantity are different numbers. Material estimates use the waste allowance, product coverage and price you enter.

Check your measurements, the product label and the supplier’s instructions before ordering. The material cost estimate does not include labor, delivery or tax. Example prices and waste percentages are illustrations, not quotes or rules for every product.

The flooring buying guide explains how these numbers fit together.
