How to convert square feet to square inches
Multiply the square-foot area by 144. A square foot is 12 inches wide and 12 inches long: 12 × 12 = 144 square inches.

2 × 144 = 288 sq in. The same surface has a larger number when measured in smaller units.
Square inches may appear as sq in, sq inches or in². An area of 12 sq in is different from a length of 12 in.

Common conversion questions
- Why multiply by 144 instead of 12?
- The factor 12 converts one length from feet to inches. Area has two dimensions, so the factor is squared: 12 × 12 = 144. There are 144 square inches in one square foot.
- Can I enter feet and inches as a measurement?
- This form expects an already calculated area, such as 1.5 sq ft or 216 sq in. For dimensions such as 12 ft 6 in, use the square footage calculator and its feet and inches help.
- What if my measurements are in inches only?
- For a rectangle, multiply length in inches by width in inches to get square inches. For example, 12 in × 18 in = 216 sq in. Enter 216 in the square-inch box to get 1.5 sq ft.
- Does this tell me how many tiles or pieces to buy?
- No. It converts area only. Piece size, packaging, cutting waste and layout affect purchasing. Keep measured area separate from your order quantity; the flooring calculator can estimate from measured dimensions and your product’s coverage.

The factors use the international foot and the area relationships in NIST’s unit tables. Calculations keep the exact factor and round only the displayed answer; extra digits do not improve the original measurement.
